Don’t Get Caught in Chester’s Web – Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween! Hope everyone has a very spooktacular day! I have been super excited about this post and was determined to finish it. Just for a heads up, there will be no post on this Thursday and most likely next week. My Gracie Baby (cat for those who don’t know) is very sick and isn’t doing too great. I want to be sure to spend as much time as possible with her, so I’m going to take the rest of this week and possibly next week off. Anyways, continue reading to find out why I’m super excited about this post and we will get started with “Don’t Get Caught in Chester’s Web – Happy Halloween…”

Why am I super excited about this post you ask? Well… Back on September 15th while looking for Gracie Baby to come in for the night, I noticed this huge spider web going across the iron fence in our small yard area. After I spotted the spider close to the middle, it kinda freaked me out, but nonetheless, I still got my phone out to take pictures since this was the perfect web and biggest spider I had ever seen (outside a zoo or aquarium of course).

Since I wasn’t getting that great of pictures in the with it being dark out, I decided I would get up the next morning and take some more. Got up, went outside and BAM – it was gone! Nothing – it was like the web and spider weren’t even there to begin with the previous night.

Since the spider and web didn’t seem to be anywhere in the morning, I decided to bring out my Canon T3 to get some better pictures. So, above are some photos I took on this day.

What Kind of Spider?:

You might have already figured out the kind of spider this is based on my title, “Don’t Get Caught in Chester’s Web – Happy Halloween.” More specifically, the ‘Chester’s Web’ instead of “Charlotte’s Web.” That’s right! This spider is the same type of spider of which “Charlotte’s Web” spider was named after.

I decided to name our backyard spider ‘Chester’ but is officially known as the Barn Spider or Orb Weaver based on its perfection of a web. Though I’m not a big fan of spiders, for some reason this one caught my interest.

Barn Spiders:

According to Wikipedia, Barn spiders only come out at night making them “nocturnal” and “[l]ike many other species of orb weavers, they take their webs down during daytime and build another every evening consuming the silk from the previous web to conserve their resources. [Barn spiders] are most commonly found in rafters and wooden structures in suburban and rural structures or areas, and on boats near lakes, thus getting their name, ‘barn spider.'” Their scientific name is “Araneus cavaticus.”

On September 19th, the only thing I found was where the spider was had been removed from that morning. When Every night when I went to get Gracie Baby in, I would check and see if he was out there but everytime found nothing.

Though I wasn’t expecting to find ‘Chester’ out and about, he seemed to have decided to come back to our backyard for one more night to visit. This was the last time I saw him.

Game Time:

Find Chester Barn Spider

Let’t play a game!! I put this small clip of pictures together for a ‘Find Waldo’ type game and named it “Find Chester.” I gave 10 seconds for each photo. The first photo is the one to see if you can spot “Chester,” while the other two I have an arrow showing where he is in that same first photo.
